Home for an Orphan - by Chris Bohon
Finally, this is a safe place. My two brothers and my sister are here in the room with me. We have been through a lot. A passerby saw us on the street and brought us here where he knew we would be cared for and would be treated with kindness. Mrs. Winters, the lady who owns this house, is the lady with a smile on her face when she talks to us. She really cares! We have beds, toys, a bathroom, and most of all, good food and water. We are sleeping well at night.
The lady came to give us vaccinations. She also checked our ears, our eyes, and our mouth to make sure we were healthy. Somehow, my right eye got scratched and everything looks a little blurry out of that eye. The doctor put some medicine in it so maybe it will be ok. We are going to be adopted so we have to be strong and healthy. If we keep eating and playing hard the way we do, we will surely be hale and hardy and ready for a new home.
Mrs. Winters is a very kind lady. I’m not sure I want to leave here. She smiles a lot when she is feeding us. I heard her tell someone that she “Britas” our water, whatever that is, it is very tasty. She touches our head with such softness, that’s how I know she is kind. She takes in us frightened kittens, takes care of us, and gets medical care for us. She finds a home for us with some person who wants a cute, playful, curious little companion.
That’s what we are all right, CUTE! We know how to close our eyes half way, drop our head, and look coy. We climb in the little basket Mrs. Winters has attached to the roof of our room (it is really a cage, I like calling it a room), and fall out over the side and look vulnerable. We just can’t help having the cute factor; it’s the way we were born to be. We are all a little different on the outside, but we all have equal cuteness. My sister is white with a striped tail and one striped ear, my brothers are striped all over. They tell me I am striped, but I have a white face and a pink nose. My toes are pink also. I guess that ‘cause I am a girl.
Each day, we all watch as the side door opens and people come in to talk to Mrs. Winters and to take a look at us. They are all “Oooohs and Ahhhhs” when they see us. Today, I say “Huh Oh” when the door opened and in came three people, and the lady pointed at me and said, “There she is.” She said she had seen me on the internet. On the internet! I didn’t know I was on the internet. How did that happen? Then all three are looking at me, and the tall man picks me up. They sat on the sofa and all of them were petting me. The boy held me and kissed me on the head. Then, the lady has me in her arms, she likes me, she really, really likes me. Then she is filling out papers, and we get our picture taken. I’ve seen all of this before, and I know I am getting a home. This entire family likes kittens, I can tell. I’m thinking, “Okay, let’s get out of here so I can start my new life.” Somehow, I feel that I have been very lucky for the most part, and I don’t think my luck is running out now. …….Muffy
